Project #13: Buoyancy flows in sedimentation ponds

Back

Description:

Sediment ponds are used to hold runoff, allowing the sediment to settle out of the water. They become less effective if the water in them becomes stratified, or if there is temperature difference between the pond and the inflow.
In this project a small experimental model of a sediment pond will be made and used to measure the speed of flow entering the pond and its retention time. This will be used to validate a CFD model which can be used to derive scaling laws for the effectiveness of the pond.
