Project #22: Optimal Upwind Sail Trim

Back

Description:

Minor adjustments in sheeting angle can have an effect on the forces generated by a sail. The aim of the project is to model 2D and 3D upwind sails and establish the optimal sheeting angles. This will clarify if accurately modelling separation is essential for CFD models of yacht aerodynamics.

Type:

Undergraduate

Outcome:

A validated CFD model of upwind yacht sails in 2D and 3D. Determination of optimal sheeting angles, and determination of accuracy requirements for CFD modelling.
