Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) incorporate distributed control and coordination to ensure better and safer transportation networks, reduced carbon emissions and improved traffic flow. In particular, ITS stands to benefit greatly from the synergy of technologies for traffic simulation, real-time control, and communication networks. In this project, we seek to use model driven approach to ITS design and will use Cities: Skylines for visualisation. We will cooperate with Auckland Transport to create real-time algorithms for intersection control. The developed algorithms will be designed in a model driven manner using the BlokIDE tool chain (see timeme.io). The model of the road network for a segment of Auckland already exists in AIMSUN. The two tools will be used in a co-simulation environment to validate the developed algorithms. Once the algorithms are validated, embedded control code will be automatically generated for intersection management. We will compare relative to existing SCATS controllers for traffic lights used in NZ and Australia.
Undergraduate
1) New algorithms for intersection management inspired by real-time scheduling of embedded systems.
2) Embedded implementation and comparison with SCATS.
3) Students will gain excellent experience for ITS jobs in a range of companies including NZTA, AT and Becca. Students will be also well prepared for PG studies, if they so desire.
