Headphones currently supplied to economy-class passengers in aircraft are very low cost and do not incorporate noise-cancelling capability. This project will continue the work of a project group last year that looked at the development of a low-cost analog-based noise cancelling technology for use in such headphones, the primary goal being to attenuate cabin noise. Though digital solutions are usually employed in noise-cancelling applications, the very high cost of software-code certification in the airline industry is one driver for an all-analog solution. Another is the sophisticated circuitry associated with digital-based solutions which raises the per-unit cost of the headphone to a level that is economically unviable.
