Project #48: Traction Control of a Four Wheel Drive Electric Formula SAE car

Back

Description:

This is a student proposal to design and implement a four wheel drive traction control system for the M017 electric car. Each wheel of the electric vehicle is independently controlled by motors, which can be run of speed or torque control mode.  The torques of these motors will be adjusted using the control algorithm to minimize the slip at each wheel. Minimization of slip while maintaining maximum traction torque can improve the vehicle handling. The implementation of control system that can be easily tuned at the track for the drivers will be carried out in the MOTEC software.

Type:

Undergraduate

Outcome:

1. Evaluation and selection of the hardware used for the package

2. A complete control system package to be used on the car written on software running on a MOTEC M150 ECU adjusted to run on electric vehicle

3. The control system will have the ability to tune the car at the track for specific conditions and drivers

4. A user interface that will be provided at car dashboard to turn on/off specific elements of traction control for different purposes.
