Project #55: Spike Sorting

Back

Description:

We intend to develop our own spike sorting software package that complements a joint PhD project with Pharmacology. This project grows brain cells on a custom built rig to evaluate efficacies of various drugs. At present 14 channels of output present the neuronal spikes from the entire rig. The software package created in this project will attempt separate the spikes and hence identify the source of the spikes.

The performance of this project will be compared to other free and commercial packages. The outcomes of this technology will also feed into a river bathymetry project which uses other sensors but with a similar problem framework. It is possible that FPGA or GPU based hardware acceleration will be required and this avenue could be explored.
