Project #76: A Fitness Coaching App for Runners

Back

Description:

Exercise-based rehabilitation is a critical part of treatment for people with cardiovascular disease; however, participation in traditional programmes is very low (typically 10%-40%). Many people are unable to complete rehabilitation because they cannot access existing face-to-face programmes in hospitals and clinical centres. Remote collection, transmission, and monitoring of physiological and geopositional sensor data can enable clinical rehabilitation specialists to provide real-time exercise supervision and coaching to patients in any location. As the health benefits of exercise-based rehabilitation are well proven the potential benefits of an approach that overcomes access-related barriers are enormous. Providing universal and low cost access to specialist rehabilitation services could dramatically improve health outcomes and reduce public health expenditure.

We have successfully trialled a remote monitoring platform comprising mobile and web apps, middleware, and wearable sensors. This project will aim to optimise the feature set and user interface of the exercise specialist-facing web app, to support larger scale implementation. Specifically, the project will aim to stream exercise specialists workflow, and enable an additional layer of supervisory monitoring by senior specialists. With guidance from the existing project team (software engineers and health scientists) you will undertake research to scope and understand the needs of clinical exercise specialists during remote patient monitoring. This research will inform your design for a web app that streamlines the existing feature set, adds additional supervisory capability, and enables future expansion of functionality in order to meet evolving end user needs.

The platform is implemented using contemporary Java frameworks and Android.
