Project #88: Integration of PV and high energy storage systems into shipboard power systems

Back

Description:

Smart Grid technologies are becoming ever more pervasive in society as the demand and necessity for a more sustainable economy grows.

One important method of transportation transitioning away from a dependence upon fossil fuels, towards sustainable technologies, is the shipping industry.

This project seeks to integrate the existing technology of solar panels and battery storage into the electrical environment of the shipping industry, to ultimately reduce the consumption of non-renewable energy sources.

Type:

Undergraduate

Outcome:

Outcomes:

- Investigate shipping power system standards.

- Integration of a solar panel system into a diesel-powered AC grid.

- Explore the feasibility of installing solar panels into refrigerated shipping containers thereby reducing the consumption of energy from the AC grid.

- Explore the limits of battery storage in shipboard grids.
