Project #91: 3D printing with functional materials: magnetic nanoparticles

Back

Description:

3D printing has gone through explosive growth as a technology to fabricate customised solid objects. However, until now 3D printed objects have been somewhat boring in they do not actually "do" anything - external sensors and actuators are required to create a functioning device.  Combining 3D printing technology with functional materials will allow fabrication of devices where sensing and actuation are integrated into the part. In this project the team will work with a PhD student to print a small, electromagnetically actuated rotor using magnetic nanoparticles.

Type:

Undergraduate

Outcome:

1. Printing of material with previously developed magnetic nanoparticles
2. Characterisation of printed structures
3. Demonstration of printed small rotor

Prerequisites

Interest in 3D printing, nanotechnology, and ability to design and build (e.g. equipment for demonstration).
