Project #96: Investigation of the performance of a resonator-lined duct as a 1D acoustic metamaterial.

Back

Description:

Recently published results from theoretical modelling suggest that a simple duct lined with an array of Helmholtz resonators can be considered as an acoustic metamaterial. Importantly this can dramatically reduce the effective speed of sound through the duct near the frequency of resonance of the resonators.

This project will be an attempt to validate the actual performance in a practical model and investigate potential applications for such a device (e.g. a lightweight traffic noise barrier barrier with good low frequency performance).

Type:

Undergraduate

Outcome:

Validation of the actual performance in a practical model and an investigation/demonstration of a potential applications for such a device (e.g. a lightweight traffic noise barrier barrier with good low frequency performance).
