There are large numbers of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in New Zealand which are facing the next generation industry termed as Industry 4.0. After a comprehensive survey on these companies, several challenges are identified when they are implementing Industry 4.0 based solutions, for example high risk of using high-tech, high investment, and high expectations. In order to tackle these challenges and showcase a feasible for local industry, this project aims to design and develop an Internet of Things (IoT) enabled Cloud Manufacturing Platform for Industry 4.0 (iCMPI for short). iCMPI uses some cutting-edge technologies including: 1) Internet of Things (IoT) technologies specifically Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) or Barcode for converting typical manufacturing resources into smart manufacturing objects (SMOs); 2) wireless manufacturing via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth for enabling interactions among SMOs; 3) Cloud manufacturing for ubiquitous application of smart factory; 4) Big Data Analytics by using machine learning models to study the captured RFID big data for advanced manufacturing decision-makings like production planning and scheduling. The deliverables from this research are useful for SMEs in New Zealand to revolutionize under the era of Industry 4.0.
