Project #57: Developing an immersive VR system to visualise "design margins" in a mechanical design

Back

Description:

A design typically includes margins in many areas (e.g. factor of safety on a shaft, motor providing greater power than necessary, etc.) Margins can help ensure a design's reliability, and can also provide the designer "room to maneuver" in case the requirements change.

While they are necessary and important, margins typically deteriorate the performance of a design (such as cost, weight, etc). Therefore, designers should carefully consider whether the margins built into their design are appropriate.

This project will investigate whether an immersive VR head mounted display can provide intuitive visualisation of margins built into a design, helping designers to identify where their designs might fail and where they can be optimized.

You will review literature on the topic and develop a demonstrator using the HTC Vive system to visualize the allocation of margins in a mechanical design, such as a power transmission system.
