Project #63: Hand-gesture based 3D navigation

Back

Description:

3D models are becoming the norm when designing a building which leads to an interest in using the models in VR (Virtual Reality) environments. In parallel technologies to map user gestures are becoming prevalent with devices such as the Leap Motion. We wish to investigate an appropriate gesture set for navigation around a 3D building model and interrogation of the properties of the building. The major research in the project will be identifying and testing appropriate hand gestures to invoke the range of functions needed for this application. Technologies used will invlude the Unity game engine, Oculus Rift headset and Leap Motion controller.

Type:

Undergraduate

Outcome:

  • A tested set of gestures which map to required 3D navigation functions
  • An 'accurate' gesture recogniser for the developed gestures
  • A Unity environment which allows navigation of a 3D building model through the gesture set
