Project #64: Inertial measurement error sources and OC-IMUs

Back

Description:

Many mainstream applications from drones to indoor navigation would benefit from high performance inertial measurement units (IMUs) that are less expensive than existing solutions. As micromechanical devices IMUs are temperature sensitive. By analogy to oven-controlled crystal oscillators (OCXOs) OC-IMU is proposed to meet tightening precision requirements. OC-IMU using off the shelf MEMS accelerometer and gyro will be developed and the performance and sources of error analysed.

Type:

Undergraduate

Outcome:

1. Review key error terms in inertial measurement and how they are modelled.
2. Characterise main sources of error in common MEMS IMU components.
3. Design and demonstrate OC-IMU
