In a 2017 FYP project a novel method was proposed for applying measurable impacts to building components. Theoretically this would enable impacts to be made on all surfaces whatever their orientation and therefore not merely on floors as with the traditional Tapping Machine. This project will be concerned with verifying the potential of this method, proving that it can cope with structures of all types expected to be encountered in buildings, modifying the mechanism for impacting as necessary and then using it predict the relative amounts of sound transmission by direct and flanking paths in a complete building

Outcome:

Refinement, as necessary, of the 2017 device for delivering impacts using an impact hammer. Experiments on different surfaces and structures to verify the device. Selecting two types of building structure - concrete masonry and light timber frame - to demonstrate the application of the device for measuring flanking transmission and comparing the results with the predictions of flanking transmission using ISO 12354.
