Large scale monitoring and data acquisition is one of the cornerstones for future IoT applications. However, existing communication technologies face compromising issues in communication range, scalability, bandwidth, power consumption etc. which make them not ideal for large scale IoT applications. This project looks specifically at the new LPWAN technology that aims to provide low power, long distance and large scale data acquisition applications and aims to investigate the feasibility of such technology in future IoT applications. The students will investigate existing LPWAN technology, develop a simulation model, and physical prototype to evaluate/demonstrate the feasibility of the technology. Familiarity with various programming languages such as Python, C and C++ is desirable.
Undergraduate
1. Investigating and evaluating different types of LPWAN technology towards data acquisition for large scale IoT applications
2. Select a specific LPWAN technology and developing a software simulation for performance evaluation
3. Develop hardware prototype for IoT applications using the selected LPWAN technology
4. Demonstrating the performance and feasibility of the developed prototype in a realistic IoT application scenario
