Project #15: Unveiling the aerodynamics of kites

Kites have been widely used for various applications, including recreational activities, sports, scientific research, and energy generation. Understanding and optimizing their aerodynamic characteristics are crucial for improving efficiency and stability in diverse operating conditions.

 

The first phase of the project involves developing high-fidelity CFD simulations to analyse the flow patterns around different kite designs. By leveraging advanced numerical techniques, we will model the complex interactions between the kite and the surrounding air, providing insights into lift, drag, and overall aerodynamic behaviour. The second phase will complement these simulations with physical wind tunnel experiments, where scale models of the kites will be subjected to controlled airflow. The combination of CFD and wind tunnel testing will allow for a comprehensive evaluation of the aerodynamic performance, guiding the design process to enhance efficiency, stability, and control of kites in various real-world scenarios. This interdisciplinary approach will contribute not only to advancements in kite design but also to the broader understanding of aerodynamics for lightweight and flexible structures.

Prerequisites

Students should be enrolled in MECHENG 712 (Aerohydrodynamics) in semester 1 and, if possible, MECHENG 718 (Computational Fluid Dynamics) in semester 2. Students should have passed MECHENG 325.
