Project #40: Improvement of Upwind Sailing Aerodynamics

Back

Description:

Most racing yachts have fractional rigs and this can cause the head of the mainsail to be separated since it is not operating in the downwash of a headsail. This project will test a modified rig that reduces this effect. The two sailing rigs will be tested at a range of apparent wind angles and compared in a velocity prediction program (VPP) to determine the overall effect. The project requires the development of models of the sailing rig and the development of a simple VPP using an existing hydrodynamics model.
