Project #19: Investigation of laser powered drone integration techniques

Back

Description:

Different methods of energy delivery are become of interest as wireless power transfer technology applications grow. Laser Power Transfer (LPT) is a method of deliverying energy to a load with high directionality and range. One such application for LPT is to deliver energy to a drone in flight, reducing the battery size required.

This project aims to integrate the receiver module of a LPT system into a drone. The receiving photovoltaic cell must be carefully chosen and a power electronic converter will need to be integrated in a candidate drone to enable the system to receive power without significantly increase its weight.

The key research questions for this project includes:

  1. What are the challenges in the integration of the charging module into a drone
  2. Can LPT be used to deliver power to a drone

Type:

Undergraduate
