Project #58: Māori Data Sovereignty for construction data connectivity

Back

Description:

Construction 4.0 processes require vertical integration of an enterprise's systems, and horizontal integration of collaborative networks and end-to-end solutions across the value chain. This requires the provision of a protocol whereby Construction 4.0 data can be readily shared and connected across platforms and the multitude of data producers and users. The protocol will fit within a “Western” Construction 4.0 paradigm as well as a Te Ao Māori paradigm. It entails data generation, capturing, transmission, conditioning, storage, and processing.

As recognised in Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Māori rights and interests in data derived from Māori inherent rights as Indigenous peoples, and unique relationships with land, water and the natural world.

Māori data refers to digital or digitisable information or knowledge that is about or from Māori people, our language, culture, resources or environments.

Māori Data Sovereignty refers to the inherent rights and interests that Māori have in relation to the collection, ownership, and application of Māori data.

Māori Data Governance refers to the principles, structures, accountability mechanisms, legal instruments and policies through which Māori exercise control over Māori data.

There are six principles of Māori Data Sovereignty: Rangatiratanga (Authority), Whakapapa (Relationships), Whanaungatanga (Obligations), Kotahitanga (Collective benefit), Manaakitanga (Reciprocity), and Kaitiakitanga (Guardianship). These principles are directly relevant to the construction data itself and the data connectivity matters.
