Project #36: Exploration of Digital equity within Auckland

Back

Description:

The interenet is now crucial to all our lives, and whilst the importance of digital inclusion is well recognised in New Zealand, the level of service people have access to is not equitable. The difference in service between rural and urban New Zealand is well documented, with the rural services proving lacking. But even within an urban environment is it equitable across the whole city? In a preliminary analysis done by SOFTENG 364 students in 2023 it was found that whilst most public libraries in Auckland had the ability to access to broadband, four did not (i.e. approximately 8% of Auckland public libaries do not have the ability to even access broadband). But the ability to access a service does not incidcate whether it has been acctually connected, nor does it indicate the quality of that service.

This project is going investigate the quality of internet services across Auckland via a series of experiments which will be designed to measure the service quality. The project will require going to sites all over Auckland to make the measurements.
