Project #97: Optimized Drone Gimbal

Back

Description:

The project aims to develop an optimized gimbal system capable of actuating heavy loads (1.2kg) while being very light weight itself (less than 800g). The unique requirements of the Suncave mean we need only 2 degrees of freedom and to only be within 10 degrees pointing accuracy toward the laser turret at any point (which is traditionally an order or magnitude less responsive than a camera gimbal).

This will be achieved through the support of Aquila (who will develop all the supporting subsystems) and using pre-existing frameworks (like the storm32 open source controller).

Type:

Undergraduate

Outcome:

The successful outcome of this project is to develop a reliable system capable of tracking a beam of infrared light projected onto it.
