Project #109: A digital twin for Lake Waikare using sensor equipped autonomous watercrafts

Back

Description:

Lake Waikare (Hamilton, Wakaito) is a heavily polluted lake in the North Island. Intensive farming has caused excessive level of nitrogen and phosphorus to build up which caused negative impact on the aquatic life. The project aims to use sensors deployed on an autonomous watercraft to collect spatial and temporal data of the lake on a regular basis to establish a digital twin model of the lake, which has the potential to offer a better understanding on the flow of water and pollutants in the lake. The targeted sensors include, but not limited to: temperature, flow, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity.

Type:

Undergraduate

Outcome:

The group will

1.     Investigate, design and construct an autonomous watercraft that is integrated with the targeted sensors and embedded computing device to collect spatial and temporal data from the lake.

2.     Investigate and design a real-time visualisation for the collected spatial temporal data.
